Can you hear me now?
Suppliers have added new features and made their hearing protection devices more comfortable. But workers have to use them — and wear them correctly — or hearing loss will continue to remain a major concern for Canadian workers.
When the Ontario government recently introduced its new industrial noise exposure limits, it set out to put a dent into one of the most prevalent occupational ailments — noise-induced hearing loss.
For many workers in a broad range of industries, the constant barrage of noise takes its toll. Hearing loss, the third most common chronic disability (after hypertension and arthritis), afflicts more than one million Canadians, with overexposure to noise accounting for one third of the problems.
Occupational Medicine is an international peer-reviewed journal, providing vital information for the promotion of workplace health and safety. Topics covered include work-related injury and illness, accident and illness prevention, health promotion, occupational disease, health education, the establishment and implementation of health and safety standards, monitoring of the work environment, and the management of recognised hazards. Contributions are welcomed from practising occupational health physicians and research workers in related fields.
